My favorite restaurant, hands down. I come here with my family every time it’s one of our birthdays and we leave with full & happy tummies. My mom and sister love the sushi, my dad loves the sashimi, and I (with the more basic palate) get edamame, vegetable tempura, pork gyoza, and steak teriyaki and love it every time!! The owner is super nice too and always cares about and remembers us with a smile. I definitely suggest dining here if you enjoy a tasteful meal and atmosphere.
This place is my favorite. I have eaten a ton of sushi but I always compare it to Yumi. They have a large variety of specialty rolls and you can create your own. They also have a nice selection of cooked food as well. A nice perk is they give you Veggie Tempura complimentary which is yummy. The staff is amazing, I always have the same waiter and we joke around the whole time and he knows what I like so when he makes suggestions they are always right on. I have also discovered here that champagne goes great with sushi.
I love it..it is a must go!!!
Inventive menu, accommodating both sushi regulars as well as sushi newbies (ie: they throw mango or tempura into a lot of their special rolls). They also have great Japanese entrees if you’re not into sushi. Everything is tasty and fresh. The staff is friendly and the owners are always there, walking around to chat with customers.
I rarely notice this in restaurants, but it turns out one of my favorite things about this place is their music. I assume it’s satellite b/c there are no commercials, but it’s this great acoustic soft rock that bodes well with everyone.
Favorites of mine: White Tuna Ceviche, Grilled Squid Salad, Ocean Ave. Roll
Also, it’s BYOB and they’ll heat your sake for you if you ask. Nice touch.
For someone who entertains clients often in NYC, I can say i’ve had some incredible sushi in my time. I’d put this place up against some of the better places i’ve been to. Fresh and inventive. The Ocean Ave roll is my favorite by far. not cheap though, expect NYC prices here at the shore. try it though, you will not be let down.
Yumi is a fantastic japanese restaurant, probably the best sushi I’ve ever had – and I live in Manhattan. It’s always extremely fresh with different specials to try. BYOB is great and they have outside seating too. Definitely get the Ocean Ave roll – it’s the BEST!
Phenomenal sushi. The fish is high quality stuff – not sub par fish soaked in sauces or fried in tempora to mask what you’re actually eating (the majority of sushi places every one raves about in this area). Tuna sashimi pizza and Sheunn rolls are must haves. Enjoy!
Try the Ocean Ave roll- possibly my favorite roll ever. The appetizers are great too, especially the scallion pancakes.
Definitely make a reservation before going because they are always busy, and if you get there and have to wait- it is worth it.
On Friday night, I had sushi for dinner again at another BYOB! Yumi yumirestaurant.com is an old favorite of mine, having lived only two miles away before my move to Maryland. A friend of mine and former neighbor have a standing date night to Yumi almost every time that we have dinner together. The restaurant has a trendy atmosphere, the food is delicious and they cater to her gluten free diet restrictions. We also greatly enjoy the ability to stop at the liquor store a few storefronts down, relax, talk over a bottle or two of wine and enjoy great food. I almost always order the same thing; however, I have never had anything that I did not like! Be warned, it is on the more expensive end for a sushi meal but the quality makes it worthwhile. I also factor in that we were able to bring our own wine, rather than buy each drink individually.
Sea Bright is a cute town but in season, parking can be an issue. There are parking meters in front of the restaurant and a large municipal lot across the street. Even in peak season, we have always been able to find parking in the lot in the evening.
For Sushi Lovers near the NJ Shore, this is a must try!! Bring a good friend, wine, and your appetite.
Excellent! You won’t be disappointed. We started with the spicy seafood soup then shared four small plates and finished with a molten chocolate cake. From looking around the other folks seemed as pleased as we were. Smiles all around. Nice crowd, good food.
My wife and I have been coming to this restaurant for over four years, we drive over an hour from our home to come here, as often as possible. The sushi is amazing, The Chef is innovative and extremely talented, the way he blends flavors is worth the ride. Our Favorite Rolls are the Ocean ave. & Shuenn , but we come down to try the new specials which always dazzle the palate.
Best Sushi in Monmouth county hands down. You will not be disappointed!
I keep coming back for the ramen bowls. Try the soft belly pork ramen bowl. It’s simply incredible.
One of the best restaurants in the area! Very fresh, very well-prepared food. I especially love the tuna sashimi pizza and the rice crispy tuna, which makes my visits a little difficult because I HAVE to order them… while saving room to try new dishes! And it’s really cool that they have wild king salmon sushi/sashimi.
The service is always jovial and professional.
I am a sushi fanatic…it is by far my favorite food. Yumi is delicious. A lot of unique rolls but best of all fresh fish. Reminds of a New York city sushi bar. They have outdoor seating there and it is BYOB. It is a bit pricey for NJ (more like NYC prices) but if you serve me fresh fish and unique rolls I can justify that. Best sushi place around the central Jersey shore hands down….there is no close second and I have tried them all. Great sushi with a nice bottle of your own wine….can’t beat that!
The rolls are not too big and all the flavors are right on point. This is one of the few sushi spots where the “special” rolls really focus on flavor and is not just a pile of ingredients pulled together for looks. One of the best favorites is the tuna sashimi pizza; it’s incredible and showcases the tuna. I often find myself craving this dish. Out of the rolls, the Sea Bright one is a favorite, with yellowtail, tuna and salmon with avocado, cucumber, fish roe, Japanese mayo, and shaved bonito sprinkle. Another fun appetizer to order is the rice crispies dish or the Shuenn roll, which has salmon tartar and spicy tuna that melts in your mouth.
Prices are on par with New York and items are a few dollars more than those of sushi places around the area, but the quality and creativity in all of the dishes is well worth it.
I love this place. Every time I go I have the frize salad with mango cashews and shrimp and the tuna tacos and is try to mix it up from there. The rolls are awesome. The fish is so fresh and delicious and the wait staff is always attentive despite the sometimes chaotic atmosphere on a Saturday night.
Chef Shuenn is a genius. His tuna pizza is a design from heaven. The best sushi around.
I really like the food and the atmosphere at Yumi. The sushi is good quality and well prepared. The appetizers are also quite good. It is one of the best sushi restaurants in the area.
I never knew fresh greens could taste so good. Perfect portion sizes – not too much, not too little. Spectacular sushi rolls. Many vegetarian options… all at a surprisingly affordable price. Highly, highly recommended.
Love this place! We live in Manhattan and eat sushi all the time but this place is amongst our favorite sushi restaurants ever. Staff is friendly and we love the BYO!
Best sushi along the shore. I live in Long Branch and never had a bad meal or sushi roll at Yumi. I recommend it to all my friends and family and they loved their experience as well. Excellent specialty rolls and very creative combinations. Excellent taste and textures and mix of spices.
Simply Amazing!! Yumi is not your typical dining experience. It is truly unique and will exceed your expectations, especially if you are adventurous. The presentation, the mixture of spices, unique textures are by far better than anything in NYC! Bring your own sake, and let them entertain you with your meal selection. This is not your standard sushi restaurant, it is well worth the price!
Awesome food with fine attention to detail. It’s BYOB so bring a great bottle of wine.
Absolutely love this place! We’ve been to many sushi & Japanese restaurants locally as well as outside of NJ and find Yumi to be exceptional. Yumi is always fresh, always inventive, always delicious. I particularly love the Yankee Roll, tuna taco, and organic salmon. The non-sushi items are wonderful as the sushi and sashimi. It’s not inexpensive and there are many small plate options but we go here regularly and have never been disappointed. An added bonus is that we almost always meet new people when eating here (especially if you’re sitting in a two-top along the far wall… the tables are closely situated and it lends itself to conversation) and the folks we meet are almost always foodies who love it as well. Regarding the service: we’ve become friendly with many of the wait staff and have found them attentive and responsive. At times the restaurant can be very busy but it is very well managed. I can’t recommend the experience more strongly.
This is by far the best sushi restaurant at the Jersey Shore! And a BYOB!!! My favorite things to order are the Avo-Ebi Cone which is Shrimp and Avocado with Lemon-Miso Sauce in Crispy Rice Paper Cone. Then the Spicy Coconut Seafood Soup which has Shrimp, Scallop, Kaffir lime, Lemongrass, Sweet Basil, Enoki Mushroom…then I finish it off with the Ocean Avenue Roll which has Shrimp Tempura, Spicy Tuna & Avocado, In Soy Paper with Spicy Kabayaki Sauce! If there is room for dessert, you must try the Tempura Cheesecake – cheesecake, rolled in, flaky pastry tortilla served with ice cream and fresh mint leaves. YUMi!
“Yumi’s seaweed salad is a divine intermezzo… the duck stuffed spring roll… trounced the competition”
“I hummed merrily as I ate the Shuenn roll… it was the back and forth that I enjoyed, the ying-yang of flavors.”
“It’s Asian, contemporary Asian, but takes a broadsweep approach and touches on just about every Eastern Cuisine.”
Chef Shuenn Yang skillfully offsets the black cod by an even more mysterious black seaweed, so dark, so alluring, with such a unique startle of brine and texture that you think perhaps it also harbors a secret or two from the deep.
The tempura cheesecake is a delightfully delicate and warm dessert reminiscent of a French pastry.
Fluke Szechuan, a sashimi plate, reflects the thin translucent slices of fluke emboldened by an exotic collection of spices and mushrooms. This is a dish by a confident chef, and you appreciate his talents.
Of the sushi, the Shuenn is one of the restaurant’s signature rolls, featuring yellowtail, avocado, spicy tuna and salmon tartare. As with every dish here, the quality of the seafood is immediately apparent. But equally remarkable are the empowering creative counterpoints; the sesame seed glaze on this roll, for example, that sparks each bite, just enough, bold without taking over.
Cashew prawns were fun, the nuts pounded to small bits to become a tempura-like crust, offering a textural counterpoint to the prawn. Hot and crisp, how could you go wrong? Even the beef teriyaki offered a gentle surprise, with tender beef, just a hint of teriyaki and a sophisticated smattering of green bean.
Everything we ordered was distinct, from the bold, magenta-colored organic salmon filet with its crisp glaze of ginger and soy, to the wasabi-peas crusted scallop, buttery and sweet and lounging about on a lush bed of cauliflower puree.
You may already know that black cod is a delicacy, fat and sweet, but at Yumi in Sea Bright, it’s a delicacy in proper hands. Lush is not an adequate word. Transcendent? Mystical?
Yumi’s menu represents a strong list of well-honed success stories. If you live here, you well respect its neighborhood fame. If you don’t live here, you will be unexpectedly charmed, sushi to dessert.
This crisp but unassuming restaurant in this sleepy, well-heeled seashore town is among the most dynamic restaurants in the state, a rival to those with the fancy big-name chefs and the professional public relations teams. Indeed, it may seem better because it
doesn’t have either.
